Yesterday I was pleased to welcome students from our Sister City of Toyonaka, Japan!  The students from Sakurazuka High School spent today attending classes at Aragon High School to practice their English, learn more about the American education system, and share Japanese culture with the Aragon students.

Remodel on tap for 92 units of affordable senior housing

Thank you to HIP Housing for taking on a $2.5 million project to rehab 92 units of affordable senior housing in our City.

On Jan 5 the City Council approved a debt restructuring that will allow the overhaul of these unit built in 1985.

New water heaters, updated bathrooms -- thank you HIP Housing!

Electric Vehicle Charging Stations Coming To Downtown San Mateo

Last week my colleagues and I approved a contract to provide the first PUBLIC electric vehicle charging stations in Northern California. The two stations will be installed in Downtown San Mateo.  Go Green, Go Electric, Go San Mateo!

9/11 Remembrance.

San Mateo friends:

We would like to invite the public to join us on September 11th, 2014 at our Fire Stations.

 

At 6:48 AM, the San Mateo Fire Department will pay respects to all the victims of September 11, 2001 by lowering the American flag to half-mast. A moment of silence will be observed at 6:50 AM, the time of the collapse of the south tower of the World Trade Center. 

All Fire Stations will participate in the flag lowering except for Station 21 in downtown. 

At Station 21, the public is invited to join Fire Personnel at 8:47 AM, the time the first plane struck the North Tower WTC1 (8:47 EST). 

The San Mateo Fire Honor Guard will lower the flag in front of Station 21 and ring the bell at the memorial. There will also be a bagpiper playing during this ceremony.

Progress Seminar

This weekend I am attending the Progress Seminar in Monterey,  a gathering of business, non-profit and government leaders to discuss issues relevant to San Mateo County.  I am here to represent the interests of San Mateo residents and it's neighborhoods.  As in previous years, while this is an important event to be at, I am not using taxpayer money to attend, but am paying my own way to this important event. 

The information I gather here will help me better serve all residents of San Mateo!

Congrats to Our New Sustainability Commissioners!

Congratulations to our five new City Commissioners of our newly formed Sustainability Commission.  John Ebneter, Jay Kuhre, Rafael Reyes, Greg St. Clare, and Sherrie Taguchi.  

For over two years I've worked to get this Commission formed.  These five Commissioners were worth the wait!

SMPD Detectives are looking for the Community’s assistance to help them identify the suspect in a violent incident, where a 66 year old female victim interrupted a suspect burglarizing her Edinburgh Street home. The victim was tied up by the suspect, and suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

 

Officers and Detectives responded immediately when the victim was able to break free and call the police. Detectives took the victim to the hospital to be treated for injuries consistent with her report. Additional SMPD Officers responded to check the victim’s residence and comb the crime scene and surrounding area for evidence and witnesses. The suspect was not on scene and has not yet been located.

The victim described the ordeal which began when she returned to her residence at about noon on Monday March 17th, and found the suspect burglarizing her home. The suspect restrained the victim, obtained her ATM card, and held the victim in her home while he accessed her account several times over the next 24 hours.

 

The suspect is described as a Hispanic male approximately 30 years-old, about 5’10’’ with a medium build, and had medium length hair with a “Wave” at the end. He was armed with a handgun. A photo of the suspect using the victim’s ATM card is attached and we are appealing to the public for assistance in identifying this individual.

 

This appears to be an isolated incident that may have started as a burglary of an unoccupied residence. SMPD is dedicating significant resources to identifying and arresting the suspect in this heinous, violent crime.  We need the community’s help as well. SAFETY REMINDER:

This incident unfortunately occurred because an unknowing victim was surprised to return home to a stranger in her residence. If you arrive home and anything seems amiss – if suspicious activity is occurring or has occurred, or you find a stranger in your home – back out if you can - go to a safe place and CALL SMPD immediately! Do not confront suspects during the commission of a crime – we can never assume the behavior of criminal strangers.

 

As always, IF YOU SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING – If you see ANY in-progress crime or suspicious activity, please contact the police department immediately via 911.

Responsive to Citizen Concerns

Late last week, I received a number of communications from neighbors who live along the shoreline regarding an upcoming contact dealing with e contract to handle algae and vegetation growth in the San Mateo Lagoon area.

After hearing from a number of neighbors, I will be asking that tonight's item to approve the contract be pulled and continued to a later date so that the residents can meeting and discuss the issue with City Staff.

As your Councilmember, I am always sensitive to the needs of our community, and when those most affected by an issue need more time to discuss the issue, I am happy to help facilitate the process.

San Mateo Police Activities League Gala.  Building bonds between cops and kids!

Turning Wastewater into Car Fuel? San Mateo can do it!

Following the theme of good environmental stewardship, I will be voting to approve a $2.4 million grant application by City staff to the California Energy Commission for a project to turn sludge from the City's wastewater treatment plant into biofuel capable of being used by the City's fleet of vehicles.

This project is just one of many that our hardworking City staff are working on to help reduce the carbon footprint of the City of San Mateo.  I look forward to voting in favor of this grant application at the Monday, March 3 City Council meeting!

City Manager Selection Interviews

Taking a vacation day from my day job for all-day City Manager interviews with residents, business owners, and employees from San Mateo!

Community Meetings - Jan 7 & 28

On Tuesday Jan. 7 and Tuesday Jan. 28 from 6:30 to 8:00 PM at the San Mateo Main Library I will be hosting an open community meeting to discuss what goals the City should be setting for our community in 2014.

Holiday Party and Toy Drive - California Apartment Association

Thanks to the Tri-County California Apartment Association for letting me stop by their holiday party and toy drive.  

Over 200 toys were collected for distribution to kids through Samaritan House, a non-profit service provider for families in San Mateo County. 

Thank you CAA for your generosity!

Holiday Events Downtown

Tonight at 5:45 at the Downtown transit station, join the Downtown San Mateo Association for a tree lighting ceremony and holiday train celebration!

And yesterday I enjoyed a pancake breakfast at fire station 21 to help gather toys for Shelter Network!
